You explain that you would like to take your audience backstage and perform an illusion exactly as it would appear to anyone backstage. You will show them what really happens behind the scenes and you will demonstrate this by vanishing a jumbo playing card. You take a small tray, which has a drape around 3 sides and hold it with the undraped side to the audience so that they can see under the tray, as if they were backstage. You now pick up 2 boards, slighlty larger than the playing card. You place them into the 2 grooves on the tray. The jumbo card is dropped between the two panels. The audience sees the card as it falls through a slit on the tray between the two panels and is seen hanging under the tray in 2 looped ribbons which catch it as it falls. You now take the two boards off the tray. You say, "That is how this particular illusion looks if watched from backstage. Now let?s see how it would appear from the front." You repeat the effect, but this time you turn the tray around so the audience cannot see what is going on under it. The open part is facing baskstage instead of facing the audience. You pick up the card and place it between the boards. After removing the boards, you say, "Of course the whole secret is not to allow anyone to see the card hanging below the tray." (At this point you turn the tray so they can see the card hanging under the tray. Then you turn the tray around again so they can no longer see the card). "So now you know how a magician can seem to make something vanish." With that your tear away the drape and there is no card, only two ribbons. A real sucker trick if there ever was one. A great prop and routine, ideal for any type show. Kids or adults. Very easy to do.
